Pan pastel portrait quick sketch
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 роки тому
In this portrait sketch I use pan pastel with black and two warm colors. The point of this was to keep loose and not get caught in perfectionistic tendencies. If you struggle with color this is a great way to ease into it. Just start with black and one color (warm or cool) and then add two colors. In this case two warm colors where one is darker and the other is a middle value or mid-tone. ENRO...

    Very interesting tutorial. I'm wondering if you could tell me about the portrait in the opening presentation. What is the yellow you colored around the eye with ?

  • @londiniumlee6358
    @londiniumlee6358 Місяць тому

    The positioning of the eye on the side view helped remind me about thinking in space. I was thinking he’d add it closer to the edge but then realised of course it’s recessed. Little reminders like that make a huge difference to inventive design. Though obviously using reference helps remind you to.

    Thanks for skipping the most important steps at 6:25. You just showed how to draw a generic head from 3/4 view, and then placed his characteristics without explaining how we can do it and make it look like the person pictured. I kinda hate these videos. It's like the maker is trying to show off his drawing skills but also doesn't actually want to help people learn

    I’ve looked at many videos like this showing the different methods. What I find difficult to grasp is how random you take a slice from the sides of the ball and how the other lines seem to be just guesswork without any reference to the model. To me the head could be any head, male or female. So maybe I am missing an important part of the method. I am also no looking to copy a picture but apply this to live sitters.

    All jokes aside, the problem I have with the Loomis method is that it takes a fair amount of understanding proportions before you even start. And, while it may just be the various tutorials I watched, it didn't tell you where the various markers for those proportions are. Chop off the sides of the head. Okay...but how much of it? Where does it start and end? I kept chopping off too much or too little, which led to the face looking wrong but not knowing why. It was years later that I watched some random person doing free drawing and they used a guideline at the end of the eyebrows that coincided with the start of the side plane of the head. And then it all clicked for me. Why didn't the 100+ Loomis videos I've watched ever show this guideline? I now use the Loomis method. But with different guidelines that make more sense in my opinion.
